What is Ketamine-Assisted Therapy?

Ketamine, a medication traditionally used as an anesthetic, has been found to be effective for off-label use in treating mental health conditions in low doses. When used alongside psychotherapy, ketamine has shown rapid improvements in symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. This combination is known as Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP), and it works by using ketamine’s ability to promote neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to form new connections– while users process difficult emotions in a new mental state.

Potential Benefits of Ketamine-Assisted Therapy:

  • Rapid reduction in depressive symptoms
  • May alleviate anxiety and PTSD
  • Works well alongside therapy to promote lasting changes
  • Can be an excellent component of ongoing depression treatment

The KAP Process at Prism Wellness

At Prism Wellness, we provide a structured and supportive environment for clients undergoing Ketamine-Assisted Therapy at our office in Cary, NC. Clients are required to work with a local medical professional to complete all necessary medical screening and assessment. Therapists also only work with clients who are utilizing Ketamine with a local medication provider and do not advocate for or permit the use of Ketamine in any other environment. Once a person has been medically assessed, diagnosed, and prescribed Ketamine for the treatment of a mental health disorder, Prism Wellness therapists may assist through the following:

Step 1 – Preparation

Before the ketamine session, clients participate in preparatory sessions with a trained therapist. These sessions are vital for ensuring comfort and understanding of what may occur from a mental health perspective. During preparation, clients will:

  • Complete a biopsychosocial assessment
  • Set goals or intentions for therapy
  • Discuss informed consent and any concerns
  • Plan music choices and comfort items for the session
  • Ensure open collaboration between medical professional and trained therapist

Step 2 – Therapeutic Support

During the ketamine session, our therapists offer supportive presence at the prescriber’s office. Clients are encouraged to have an “Inner Directed Approach,” meaning they focus on their own insights rather than being guided by questions. The therapist may:

  • Offer reassurance and a calming presence
  • Take notes as needed
  • Assist with breathing techniques if necessary
  • Manage the environment (e.g., music) to promote a calming space

Step 3 – Integration

After the ketamine experience, integration sessions are critical to help clients reflect on the insights gained and apply them to everyday life. This phase helps sustain long-term benefits by:

  • Exploring how to incorporate new perspectives into daily routines
  • Addressing any challenges in maintaining changes
  • Guiding clients in reinforcing neural pathways established during the session

Is Ketamine-Assisted Therapy Right for You?

Ketamine-Assisted Therapy may be a good fit if:

  • You suffer from treatment-resistant depression
  • You experience ongoing anxiety or PTSD
  • You have a safe and supportive environment to return to post-treatment
  • You have the desire to actively engage in therapy
